THE CHAKRA GUIDE: FOOD EDITION

Balancing your chakras is essential for a happy, healthy, and harmonious life. Foods can support them and bring them back into balance amongst other practices like exercise, affirmations, mindset shifts, actions, and emotional release.

Our emotions shift energy, and we have 7 chakras that run along the spine that carry our energy (and emotions) and govern different aspects of our lives and desires.

Below is a quick guide to the seven main chakras - their name, typical age development occurs, associated colors, and foods that can support them.

CHAKRA #1 - THE ROOT

Ages: 0-7 years old

Color: Red

Governs: Safety & Security. Stability. Feeling 'grounded'. Survival Instincts.

Supportive Foods: Think red and foods with ‘roots’. Red foods from the earth, including red apple and cranberry, foods with roots such as radishes, red potatoes, beets; red beans and lentils. Red fruits, including watermelon, pomegranate, cherries, red berries. Red herbal teas such as hibiscus. Harvest grains and other deeply rooted grains and proteins.

CHAKRA #2 - THE SACRAL

Ages: 7-14

Color: Bright Orange

Governs: Reproductive System. Hormones. Pleasure. Creativity. Fluidity.

Supportive Foods: Orange foods like cumin, turmeric, ginger, rooted foods with deep orange. Spices and teas that soothe elimination and balance hormones (calming). Carrots, peppers, squashes, oranges, tangerines. Foods with vitamins C, B, and A. Foods with a high water element in them. Eating what the body requires for optimal health and sustenance including earth and trace minerals.

"As a culture, we are currently stuck in this sacral energy center. We have an extreme need to experience pleasure, we expect pleasure, and we wish for quick rewards, including the avoidance of both physical and emotional pain, which can numb deep pleasure. In general terms, we are imbalanced in that we pay ample attention to things that are outside of ourselves instead of within ourselves." – Jill Willard

CHAKRA #3 - THE SOLAR PLEXUS aka THE GUT

Ages: 14-21

Color: Yellow

Governs: The gut. Power, self-worth, boundaries, confidence

Supportive Foods: Lemon, yellow vegetables, healthy fats and oils. Banana, melons, soothing chamomile and herbal teas. Cinnamon.

CHAKRA #4 - THE HEART

Ages: 21-28

Color: Typically Green but also bright pink, or gold

Governs: Heart. Love. Equality. Unity. Relationships.

Supportive Foods: Vibrant green nutrient-rich vegetables, cruciferous vegetables, green water-based alkalizing fruits and vegetables (like limes, green apples, zucchini, and celery), clear water, and healthy fats. Decreased Dairy. More avocados. Artichokes. Green beans. Leafy vegetables. Water.

For anyone who is dealing with heart-related emotions—those who are downhearted, broken-hearted, ill-hearted, or coldhearted—artichokes are critical. Eaten on a regular basis, artichokes have the power to open up the heart chakra, and to ignite healing through this sacred channel - Anthony William

CHAKRA #5 - THE THROAT

Color: Blue

Governs: Throat, Thyroid, Voice, Truth, Liberation

Ages: 28-35

Supportive Foods: Clear nutritional whole foods from the earth with air and water elements and, very important, listening to what your body needs at any time and giving it precisely that. Blueberries. Clear Liquids or Broths. Herbal Teas. Alkaline or mineral water.

CHAKRA #6 - THE THIRD EYE
